The The Avengers TV
Introduction
The Avengers was a totally unique television series that was shown on British television screens from 1961 to 1969.
It started as a tough espionage thriller, was transmitted in glorious black and white and is now thought of
as a bit "rough and ready" since it was taped 'as live' and with no chance in the The Avengers TV of rectifying any mistakes. There are moments in the
early seasons where actors trip up over lines and cameras practically fall over.
The The Avengers TV - first series
This featured the character of Dr. David Keel (played by Ian Hendry). Keel's contact in this shady world was John
Steed (Patrick Macnee), a debonair, efficient and often unscrupulous government agent. Ingrid Hafner, portraying
Keel's secretary, Carol Wilson, would occasionally join them in their exploits. Henry left the The Avengers TV in September 1962
which saw Patrick Macnee promoted to series lead. Honor Blackman joined as Cathy Gale who started the leather pants theme.
Honor Blackman stayed for 2 years and was replaced by the adorable Diana Rigg.
Some of the early Avengers Emma Peel episodes (in chronological order)
The Murder Market
Curious and untimely deaths point to a quirky marriage bureau which offers the bonus of an assassination service for their more affluent clients. Steed and Emma infiltrate the organization by posing as eligible singles - which Steed certainly is!
The Master Minds Emma proves in this episode of the The Avengers TV, that she has as much brains as looks as she helps Steed match wits with cerebral crooks. Their plot to steal a nuclear missile starts to unravel when one of their group, a respected politician, gets caught while trying to steal top secret documents.
Dial a Deadly Number Key businessmen are dropping dead from heart failure in this episode of the The Avengers TV, causing tremors in the world of high finance. The trail twists its way via bankers and brokers with "bleepers" to an extremely creepy "back room boy" named Fitch, a man with a fetish for clocks and killing.
Death at Bargain Prices This one in the The Avengers TV is about an ordinary department store receipt found on a dead agent is a clue in the case of a missing scientist. With Emma posing as a store clerk and Steed as an efficiency expert, they uncover an extraordinary plot to erase London from the map with an atom bomb hidden in the store.
Too Many Christmas Trees Steed is having bad nightmares which then seem to play out in real life. The reason: A band of telepaths is after the secrets he carries in his mind. Trouble is, in this episode of the The Avengers TV, the end result of the process is death. It all comes to a head at a Christmas party hosted by Brandon Storey, a noted collector of Dickens manuscripts, amongst other much more sinister things.
The Cybernauts Industrial bigwigs invited to bid on a "new circuit element" are being murdered by what appears to be a karate expert in this episode of the The Avengers TV. Steed and Emma eventually discover, however, that the killer is not flesh and blood, but a deadly robot built by a brilliant inventor for the purpose of obtaining exclusive rights to the new electronic product - a product that would allow him to create machines capable of replacing humans.
The Gravediggers The country's early warning radar system is failing intermittently in this episode of the The Avengers TV and Steed and Emma are charged with the task of finding out why. The trail leads from a graveyard to a hospital run exclusively for the benefit of railway men where, unbeknownst to the eccentric financier, a plan is being hatched to disable Britain's entire defense system with jamming devices hidden in coffins.
Finally
The The Avengers TV series ended with "Bizarre" on 30th May 1969 after which the New Avengers series kicked in featuring the delicious Joanna Lumley.
